Meetings/Minutes
The Black Rock Garden Club hold monthly meetings on the third Thursday of the month, with guest speakers on a variety of topics of interest to gardeners. During the summer months, we hold meetings in the gardens of our Club members and share ideas and interests.
BRGC Minutes- May 15th, 2008
Meeting at the home of Lyn van den Handel were Maxine Greenberg, Meredith
Van den Handel, Eleanor Banacowski, Gen Barthe, Lynne Interlandi, Dierdre
Fahy, Wendy Nylen, Susie Basler, Joy van Hemert and Laurie Krumrey.
The meeting began with a tour of Lyn’s lovely shade garden behind her house where members suggested adding variegated hostas to brighten up the border. Rain threatened and we decamped indoors for a look at Lyn’s beautiful paneled dining room and a bit of wine and cheese.
Maxine began the meeting with the question of which project to pursue with a RYASAP grant. Because Edie Cassidy had already written a grant proposal for the
Ash Creek Berm project (which we did not get), it was decided to use the RYASAP
grant for a scaled down version of the Berm project. Edie and Wendy Lindquist are
spearheading this effort in conjunction with the Ash Creek Conservation Assoc.
and will be having an organizational meeting on May 28th . Contact Edie or Maxine for details. Other ideas for future projects included the Community Garden on
Walnut Street in the South End and a beautification project for the Black Rock Library.
Next on the agenda was the Black Rock Day Parade in which we are having a float.
The parade is on June 8 and we will have a flat bed trailer from Lindquist Landscaping. A planning meeting will be held at Edie Cassidy’s (245 Ellsworth) on June 1, at 7pm. Anyone interested in helping decorate or riding on the float should come. Anyone who wants to walk along side the float and hand out seed packets is welcome to come also. Straw hats will be de rigeur.
Gen Barthe brought up the idea of a signature Black Rock flower or plant that the club could promote. She recommended the head turning frittilaria in front of her house as an example. Also she says the Lutheran Church will be having a fair in early October with tables for community organizations. Bulb sales?
Our next meeting will be June 19th at the home of Lynne Interlandi at 68 Bartram Ave.
and will feature Christine Cook speaking about mosses. In conjunction, we will be planning a weekend trip to the Sticks and Stones Moss farm on Newtown in June.
Details to come.
